Fires are unexpected, and most homeowners are not sure what to do after the fire is put out.  We offer a few tips to help you out until we arrive:

1. Limit movement in the home to prevent soot from becoming embedded in the carpeting and furniture.
2. Keep your hands clean so that soot is not transferred to upholstery, walls, furniture, or woodwork.
3. Blow or brush-vacuum loose soot particles from upholstery and drapery.
4. Place clean towels or old linens on carpeting traffic areas, over upholstery, and over area rugs.
5. If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator.  Open doors and leave them propped open to allow air to circulate.
6. Clean and protect chrome on kitchen and bathroom faucets, and appliances by applying a light coating of Vaseline or oil.
7. If the temperature outside is below freezing, and the electricity is turned off, add antifreeze to toilets, sinks and tubs.  Open cabinets around water pipes and under sinks to help prevent freezing. 
8. Wash both sides of leaves on all house plants.
9. Change HVAC filter.
10. Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers to prevent soot particles from getting in or out of the HVAC system.  Coffee filters can be used if cheesecloth is not available.
